Joan Cates

Biography

Joan Cates is a contemporary artist based in Charlottesville, Virginia known for her playful and abstract interpretations of the world around her. As life is full of contrast, so is her work. Joan’s abstract works explore space and texture with an emphasis on color and form.

Born in Texas and raised in Houston, Joan’s creative journey began early and was nurtured through her studies at the University of Houston. In addition to commissioning artwork from her Virginia Studio, she provides original works to a staging company – transforming and energizing interior spaces. She is now proud to be represented in Houston by Mont Art House.

Her mediums of choice are acrylic, pastel, and ink or pencil on canvas or paper. Her work ranges widely in scale – from large statement canvases to smaller pieces that can stand alone or be grouped for a gallery wall.

Joan’s artistic journey is propelled by knowing that people have an emotional connection to art – whether it’s whimsical, soothing, or dramatic – “it’s art not science”. Let there be Art!
